Freelance Guidelines

The Horse Resource Magazine  is a national magazine based in Muncie, Indiana covering the equine industry.  Our readers are stock horse enthusiasts with interests as broad as the equine industry itself.

The Horse Resource seeks current, well-written and informative pieces that have an impact on the horse industry. We do not accept poetry or purely sentimental pieces.

The Horse Resource is continually in need of feature-length (1,200 to 1,500 words) and article-length (700 to 900 words) submissions relating to the stock horse industry. Feature type articles on breeders, trainers, training methods and influential horses, as well as youth and non-pro competitors, breed history and how to articles on specific training methods and showing are especially popular.  Article-length reports of timely and newsworthy events, such as shows, races and overseas competition, are also welcome but must be pre-approved by the editor.  Short articles including how-to, where-to-go, or human interest stories about horses and their owners are also popular subjects and may be used.  Equine health care articles may be used, but the article must be well-researched and include new or useful information from qualified experts with established credentials.  Well-written and photographed articles on outdoor activities such as trail rides are welcomed.
Submissions outside of the above mentioned guidelines will be evaluated according to relevance and content matter. Lengthy stories, opinion pieces, pieces containing inaccurate information or poorly written pieces especially those containing misspellings or improper grammar and/or punctuation will be rejected.  The main consideration is the presentation of factual information in an interesting and concise manner.

Manuscripts may be submitted on a CD or via e-mail in Microsoft Word or text-only format. If sent via CD, an accompanying hard copy should be printed and double spaced in black ink.
Authors are responsible for accuracy of material, and a byline is required for any published material.  All breeds must be identified and  horses’ names must exactly match the names listed on registration papers.

Suitable photography is considered part of the complete editorial package. Photographs should be visually appealing, high quality photographs that feature stock horse breeds representing the major points of the article.  It is the writer's responsibility to include high-quality photographs to accompany the article.

Digital images in RAW format are preferred, but any other image must be no less than 300 dpi at 5×7 inches. Good quality, color prints are accepted, and preferred size is 8x10, but 5x7's of superior quality may also be accepted.  In general, slides, Polaroids or photos from point and shoot cameras will not be of the quality required and will be rejected.  Submit both horizontal and vertical format photos for design and layout flexibility.

Captions, including identification of horses and people pictured, are required for all photos accompanying an article and are preferred with freelance photography. Model releases, photographer’s name and other pertinent information must accompany the image. To avoid damaging an image, never write on either side of the print.

Before submitting an article to The Horse Resource, please contact the editor. A self-addressed, stamped envelope is not required. However, if you send a manuscript and wish to have it returned, please include appropriate postage. If the editor approves your idea, you will be required to submit an outline of the article, including a list of the photos that will accompany the submission.

The Horse Resource editorial staff will review your submission.  Once accepted, manuscripts are edited to conform to The Horse Resource style.  We appreciate submissions from writers who have familiarized themselves with the magazine’s style.

Once an article has been accepted, an offer of compensation may be made.  The Horse Resource is not responsible for unsolicited materials.  All freelance correspondence for The Horse Resource should be directed to Editor, Christa Conway, and titled "Freelance"
